Resident Bio
Helina is originally from Bellevue, Washington. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Washington and earned a dual MD/MPH from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Her clinical interests include surgical oncology and advancing health equity, with a particular focus on improving access to high-quality surgical care for underserved populations.
Dr. Mengesha chose George Washington University Hospital for its strong sense of community—both within the institution and throughout the greater Washington, D.C. area. She has been actively involved with the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) and the American Public Health Association (APHA), demonstrating a longstanding commitment to advocacy, mentorship, and public health. Outside of medicine, she enjoys collecting and caring for a diverse array of houseplants.
